Shravani Mela

About

Shravani Mela is one of the largest annual religious pilgrimages celebrated during the holy month of Shravan (July–August) as per the Hindu calendar. In 2026, the festival is observed from 28th July to 28th August, spanning four weeks of continuous religious activities and devotion.

The month of Shravan is considered highly auspicious and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. During this sacred period, millions of devotees, popularly known as Kanwariyas, undertake a spiritual journey from Sultanganj to the revered Baba Baidyanath Dham Temple in Deoghar, Jharkhand. Pilgrims collect holy water from the Uttarvahini (northward-flowing) River Ganga at Sultanganj and carry it on foot over a distance of approximately 105 kilometres to offer it to Lord Shiva. Devotees from across India, Nepal, and several other countries participate in this sacred pilgrimage every year.

Throughout the month, the entire pilgrimage route transforms into a vibrant spiritual corridor, resembling a grand fair. Temporary camps, food stalls, resting shelters, medical facilities, drinking water points, sanitation services, and volunteer assistance are established to support the lakhs of pilgrims undertaking this journey. The atmosphere is filled with devotional chants of "Bol Bam", creating a unique blend of faith, tradition, and community service.

The Bhagalpur District Administration, in coordination with various government departments, undertakes extensive preparations to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the Shravani Mela. Comprehensive security arrangements, traffic management, health camps, emergency medical services, disaster response teams, drinking water facilities, sanitation measures, and round-the-clock control rooms are deployed along the pilgrimage route and at major congregation points. These coordinated efforts aim to provide a safe, comfortable, and well-managed pilgrimage experience for all devotees until the conclusion of the festival on 28th August.
